How do beauty and antrocities in the landscape relate to eachother?

This is a photo project that tells a story about the landscape formed by the relationship between place, event and memory. It reveals the resonance of history within the landscape.
What fascinates me is the visible beauty of nature which coexists with (partly) hidden gruesome history.

This work stems from my fascination with the nature of our relationship with our environment and what we call landscape. The question of what a landscape actually is and the emergence of self-evident that land can become property.

Besides this I am interested in the phenomenon of borders, how borders arise. Or better, why they came into existence.

These are landscape pictures. But what is a landscape? They are as well as a metaphor for who we are and how we interact with the land.
An image – investigative project about (former) border and conflict areas. It is not documentary; the photos are set in the landscape, but a place does not have to be immediately recognizable.

Can the earth remember?
Can the land bear witness in some way?
Is nature indifferent?

There are physical traces, but are there also spiritual traces? They are elusive…
With photography I try to challenge the viewer to look beyond the physical elements in the image.

Period and location

This project is located around the border area of ​​Italy, Austria and Slovenia.
The Guerra Bianca, the Karnischer Höhenweg and the Isonzo Front.
Besides the mountains, the two rivers Soča and Piave and the Slovenian karst mountains, define the landscape and the destination here.
The so-called foibe are particularly unique and exceptional. These are natural openings, deep sinkholes, formed by the limestone in the karst mountains. The foibe are inextricably linked to the ethnic cleansing that took place there and are now known primarily as the “foibe massacres.”

This project certainly does not follow a chronological line.
I seek a connection between the present and the past; keywords include struggle, loss, hope, memory, presence/absence, and abandonment.

Analogue photography, working method.

All photos will be made with an analogue camera. This is partly due to the ‘feel’ of a barite print and alternative development and printing methods. I don’t find the harshness of digital sharpness appealing. I also miss the craftsmanship involved in working on a screen.

When making a picture, the slowing down of the process forces to more attention. The slow and intensive process of photographing with a self-built medium format camera fits better with the photographic result that I want to achieve.

After making the pictures ‘out of doors, the work in the darkroom will start. All photos are printed by myself on silvergelatine paper and selenium toned.

Introductie tot het project

Hoe verhouden schoonheid en gruweldaden in het landschap zich tot elkaar?

Dit is een fotoproject dat een verhaal vertelt over het landschap dat gevormd wordt door de relatie tussen plaats, gebeurtenis en herinnering. Waarin de resonantie van de geschiedenis in het landschap zichtbaar wordt.
Wat mij boeit is het samengaan van een zichtbare schoonheid van de natuur en (deels) verborgen gruwelijke geschiedenis.

Dit werk komt voort uit mijn fascinatie voor de aard van onze relatie met onze omgeving en dat wat we landschap noemen. De vraag wat een landschap eigenlijk is en het ontstaan van iets vanzelfsprekend dat een land eigendom kan worden.

Behalve dat ben ik geïnteresseerd in het verschijnsel grenzen, hoe grenzen ontstaan. Of beter, waarom ze zijn ontstaan.

Het zijn landschapsfoto’s. Maar wat is een landschap? Ze zijn even goed een metafoor voor wie wij zijn en hoe we met het land omgaan.
Een beeld – onderzoekend project over (voormalige) grens- en conflictgebieden. Het is niet documentair; de foto’s spelen zich in het landschap af, maar de plaats hoeft niet direct herkenbaar te zijn.

Kan de aarde herinneren?
Kan het landschap getuigen?
Is de natuur onverschillig?

Er zijn fysieke sporen, maar zijn er ook spirituele sporen? Ze zijn ongrijpbaar…
Met de fotografie probeer ik de kijker uit te dagen verder te kijken dan de fysieke elementen in de afbeelding.

Tijd en locatie

Dit project is gelokaliseerd rond het grensgebied van Italië, Oostenrijk en Slovenië. Grofweg: de Guerra Bianca, Karnischer Höhenweg, Isonzo front.
Behalve de bergen zijn de twee rivieren Soča en Piave en het Sloveense karstgebergte hier beeld- en bestemming bepalend.
Zeer specifiek en uitzonderlijk zijn de zogenaamde foibe. Dit zijn natuurlijke openingen, diepe sinkholes, gevormd door het kalksteen in het karstgebergte. De foibe zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met de etnische zuiveringen die daar hebben plaatsgevonden en nu vooral bekend zijn als de ‘foibe massacres’.

Dit project volgt zeker geen chronologische lijn.
Ik zoek een verbinding tussen heden en verleden; trefwoorden hierin zijn strijd, verlies, hoop, herinnering, aan- / afwezigheid, verlatenheid.

Analoge fotografie, werkwijze

Alle foto’s worden gemaakt met een analoge camera. Dit onder andere vanwege de ‘feel’ van een barietafdruk en alternatieve ontwikkel- en printmethodes. De hardheid van digitale scherpte vind ik niet aantrekkelijk. Ook mis ik de betrokkenheid van het ambacht bij het werken op een beeldscherm.

Bij het maken van een foto dwingt de vertragende werkwijze tot meer aandacht. Het langzame en intensieve proces van het fotograferen met een zelfgebouwde middenformaat camera past beter bij het fotografisch resultaat dat ik wil bereiken.

Na het maken van de opnames ‘out of doors’ volgt het werken in de doka. Alle foto’s worden door mijzelf afgedrukt op selenium getoond barietpapier.

Presentatie

Dit project zal verschijnen in een fotoboek, analoge fotoprints en een expositie. Zodra er meer informatie hierover is zal dit op deze webpagina te vinden zijn.
