Bob Wielaard (1964) is a Dutch photographer. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and attended workshops at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam.
For a long time he worked in architectural design. In recent years the emphasis has been on photography.
Travels through the Scottish Highlands have deeply changed his view and approach to the land and his photography. The vast expanse of nature resulted in a more intuitive approach.
The question of what a landscape actually is, is determined by aspects such as ‘materiality’, human presence / absence, memory, history and event.
His photography is mainly monochromatic.
A certain desire for real baryta prints, the feel of it, stripped of digital sharpness, with a grown aversion to digital screens, the plan arose to start working with film again. And quite a bit of craftmanship: building a 6 x 12 camera and then a enlarger for that format.
The camera, the film, the landscape, making the composition under a black cloth and making prints in the dark room. Working with this camera is intense, intensive. It requires a different approach to the subject, more of a rediscovery of the landscape, which for some still unclear reasons feels better with this method.
And time passes more slowly.
